A shrub is a traditional sweet-and-tangy cordial made by combining fruit, sugar, and vinegar (and in some historic versions, fruit juice and alcohol). The result is bright, punchy, and ridiculously refreshing, like a fruit cordial with a zesty kick.
Shrubs rose to popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, when preserving fruit wasn’t easy. People used vinegar or spirits to capture fruit flavour and keep it for longer, creating vibrant, flavour-packed syrups that could be mixed into drinks all year round.
The Forgotten Corner Drinks Company is a small, family-run business based on the Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall, with a mission to revive drinks that slipped out of modern life.
Their Shrub comes with a proper family legend too, the original recipe was borrowed from their great gran’s secret recipe book, a book that reportedly helped keep the local town “well oiled” through World War Two.
